Secrets of Göbekli Tepe: Oldest Temple in the World
Long before the pyramids rose along the Nile… before hieroglyphs were etched into stone or pharaohs ruled the land of Egypt… ancient hands carved a mysterious sanctuary into the hills of southeastern Turkey.
Discovered in the 1990s, Göbekli Tepe has been called the world’s first temple—a sacred site built nearly 12,000 years ago, millennia before writing, agriculture, or cities. But who built it? Why? And how did a pre-agricultural society organize such a massive effort?
In this richly illustrated talk, Egyptologist and ancient cultures expert Laura Ranieri Roy takes you deep into the astonishing archaeology of Göbekli Tepe—its towering T-pillars, intricate animal carvings, and spiritual symbolism. You'll hear the dramatic story of its discovery, learn about the site’s cutting-edge excavations today, and explore why this enigmatic place is rewriting everything we thought we knew about the birth of civilization.
We’ll also draw fascinating comparisons to Ancient Egypt, where monumental architecture and cosmic symbolism re-emerged thousands of years later. Could Göbekli Tepe have influenced later sacred traditions—or are we seeing the sparks of spiritual expression igniting independently in early humanity?
Plus, Laura will share what it’s like to visit this remote and awe-inspiring site, including travel tips, nearby treasures like Karahan Tepe, and what not to miss on your Anatolian adventure.
