We began our exciting journey through Istanbul’s captivating history at the ancient Hippodrome, once the social and political hub of Byzantine life. Imagine chariot races and imperial ceremonies as you explore the impressive monuments that still stand today, including the Serpent Column and Obelisk of Theodosius. Next, step into the magnificent Blue Mosque, where the striking beauty of its cascading domes and 20,000 hand-painted Iznik tiles create a serene, otherworldly atmosphere. This is a profoundly spiritual place. Across the way, we will visit one of Turkey’s most famous gems: the magnificent Hagia Sophia, a monumental symbol of Byzantine splendor with its vast dome and glittering mosaics that once made it the largest cathedral in the world. A mosque today, it was built in the 6th century by the Emperor Justinian and today is celebrated as one of the most important historic sites in the world. We will stop for lunch at a special place enroute, taking a break from touring. In the afternoon, explore the lavish halls of Topkapı Palace, the opulent residence of Ottoman sultans, filled with treasures, stunning courtyards, and breathtaking views of the Bosphorus. Finally, descend into the cool, mysterious depths of the Basilica Cistern, an underground marvel supported by hundreds of ancient columns, where reflections of flickering lights dance across the water. Return to the hotel to freshen up – for dinner on your own. - Overnight NeoRion B, L
- Hippodrome monuments
Among these was the sacrificial tripod, now known as the Serpent Column, cast to celebrate the victory of the Greeks over the Persians during the Persian Wars in the 5th century BC. Constantine ordered the Tripod to be moved from the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, and set in middle of the Hippodrome. Another emperor to adorn the Hippodrome was Theodosius the Great, who in 390 brought an obelisk from Egypt and erected it inside the racing track. Carved from pink granite, it was originally erected at the Temple of Karnak in Luxor during the reign of Thutmose III in about 1490 BC. Theodosius had the obelisk cut into three pieces and brought it to Constantinople. The top section survives, and it stands today where Theodosius placed it, on a marble pedestal. The granite obelisk has survived nearly 3,500 years in good condition. - Blue Mosque

Construction, ordered by the Sultan Mehmet the conquerer began in 1459, six years after the conquest of Constantinople. Topkapı was originally called the “New Palace” and was the administrative center and palace of the Ottoman sultans. - Basilica Cistern
